What this video is about
In this episode of EntreSesiones, Alberto Moreno talks at Elemental with Alberto Gimeno, clinical psychologist and author of a book on effectiveness and processes in psychotherapy. Gimeno explains that he is from A Coruña, that he has lived in Gijón since moving there for his PIR clinical psychology residency and that he works mainly in private practice, doing therapy, supervision and some training. He explains why he chose private practice: the lack of opportunities in the public system when he finished his residency, his preference for organising his own schedule and the chance to balance work with family life, although he describes himself as a supporter of the public system.
The conversation addresses the paradox that there has never been so much public communication about mental health while figures for psychological problems keep rising. Gimeno argues for communication that is clear, contextual and not alarmist, without being patronising or oversimplifying, and warns that on social media sensationalist content tends to reach more people.
They also talk about therapist self-care: not isolating oneself, sharing with colleagues and having regular supervision, which he considers key to his professional development. Finally, they reflect on authenticity and consistency in therapy, an interest in reading beyond psychology and the idea that what works for a therapist also works for anyone.
